Kim Jong Un Appears in New Photos After Death Rumors
North Korean state media released images of Kim Jong Un inspecting clothing and shoes, countering social media speculation about his death.
North Korea has released new photographs appearing to show leader Kim Jong Un inspecting a garment and footwear exhibition, following a wave of social media rumors that he had died from a brain hemorrhage. The images, published by North Korean state media on Monday, depict a seemingly active Kim examining children's footwear and women's coats.
The released photos emerged shortly after claims circulated online suggesting Kim had suffered a severe cerebral hemorrhage, fallen into a coma, and died after being transferred to Beijing for medical treatment. These unsubstantiated allegations were initially spread by a US-based Chinese dissident and gained traction on social media and in some international news outlets.
The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim attended the exhibition on Monday, though the authenticity and exact timing of the photographs have not been independently verified. One image shows Kim bending to examine a small shoe, while another captures him gesturing emphatically to officials. A third shows him inspecting a women's coat.
These claims of Kim's demise were not accompanied by verifiable evidence such as medical records or witness accounts. The speculation also raised questions about the potential succession of power to his sister, Kim Yo Jong.
North Korea has not directly addressed the rumors of Kim's death. However, the released images appear intended to dispel such speculation. Kim's health has been a subject of international interest, with South Korea's National Intelligence Service previously noting his significant weight and elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, while also stating there were no immediate signs of serious illness.
This incident echoes a similar false alarm in 2020 when a North Korean defector claimed Kim was dead after surgery. He later apologized when Kim reappeared publicly.
