Killer of Henry Nowak Granted Leave to Appeal Sentence
The Court of Appeal will review Vickrum Digwa's 21-year minimum sentence in November.
Vickrum Digwa, who was convicted of murdering Henry Nowak, has been granted leave to appeal his sentence. The Court of Appeal is scheduled to decide in November whether to reduce or lengthen the 21-year minimum term.
Digwa, 23, was also convicted of carrying a knife in public. Following the stabbing of Nowak, Digwa falsely claimed to police that he was the victim of a racist attack.
The case drew public attention after the release of police body-worn camera footage. The footage showed officers failing to administer first aid to Nowak, who was dying, and instead handcuffing him. Nowak reportedly told officers he could not breathe.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is investigating two officers involved for potential gross misconduct. The protests that followed the incident saw 12 police officers and a police dog injured. Demonstrators gathered outside the city center police station and near Digwa's family home and the murder scene.
More than 30 individuals have been charged with violent disorder in connection with the protests.
