Lane Kiffin’s tenure as LSU’s head coach began with a dominant 51-10 victory over Clemson, showcasing an explosive offense and stifling defense. The highly anticipated debut, however, experienced a nearly two-hour delay before kickoff due to a downpour and lightning.
Sam Leavitt, a transfer quarterback who previously led Arizona State to the College Football Playoff, contributed 113 rushing yards and two touchdowns, along with 230 passing yards and a touchdown. LSU’s defense also made a significant impact, with edge rusher Jordan Ross returning an interception for a score. Dilin Jones, a transfer from Wisconsin, added 113 rushing yards and two touchdowns for LSU.
By halftime, LSU held a commanding 31-3 lead, outgaining Clemson 336 yards to 54 and achieving 21 first downs to Clemson’s one. LSU finished the game with 644 yards of total offense, marking Clemson's most lopsided loss in approximately 30 years. "The best thing about that game is it's over," said Clemson coach Dabo Swinney. "Just really poor performance, not what we worked for or expected."
Kiffin commented on the team's performance, lightheartedly noting, "Imagine if we had pro players," referencing a recent controversy regarding potentially adding former Mississippi players who had spent time with NFL teams. A Louisiana court ruling had cleared the way for Kiffin to roster two such players, tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, but he ultimately chose not to, citing opposition from the NCAA and SEC. "My job is to not please you and what you are going to write. My job is what I believe is right — and I believe we were fighting for what is right for those kids," Kiffin stated regarding the situation.
Clemson’s offense struggled throughout the game. Starting quarterback Christopher Vizzina was benched in favor of freshman Tait Reynolds late in the second quarter. "We’re not helping our defense at all," Vizzina commented after the game, acknowledging the offense's inability to capitalize on an early interception.
LSU's rushing game showed marked improvement compared to the previous season, exceeding its entire 2025 per-game average in the first half alone. The team’s offensive line, the addition of Jones, and Leavitt’s mobility were key factors. LSU’s defense, coordinated by Blake Baker, also performed strongly, contributing four sacks and a defensive touchdown while limiting Clemson to under 100 yards and preventing a touchdown until late in the fourth quarter.
