Kibbutz Nir Oz Residents Share Hopes of Returning Home After October 7th Attacks
Survivors and families of victims from a kibbutz heavily impacted by the October 7th attacks discuss their desire to rebuild and return to their community.

As Israel approaches the third anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attacks, residents of Kibbutz Nir Oz, one of the communities most severely affected, are expressing their determination to return and rebuild. The kibbutz, located just a mile from the Gaza border, experienced devastating losses.
During the attacks on October 7th, 41 residents and foreign workers from Nir Oz were killed. The violence also claimed the lives of six individuals who had sought refuge at the kibbutz from a nearby party. In addition to the fatalities, 76 people from the kibbutz were taken hostage into Gaza, with nine of them confirmed dead in captivity.
Nationally, the October 7th attacks resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 people taken hostage. The subsequent conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to a significant loss of life in Gaza, with the Hamas-run health ministry reporting over 74,200 fatalities, figures acknowledged as accurate by the United Nations.
The BBC's Middle East Correspondent visited Kibbutz Nir Oz to document the impact of the attacks and the ongoing sentiment among its former residents. The desire to return to Nir Oz reflects a broader hope for recovery and resilience among communities affected by the conflict.
