Keyshawn Johnson Offers Advice to Garrett Wilson and Jets Coaches
Former Jets star Keyshawn Johnson advises patience for receiver Garrett Wilson and suggests collaborative problem-solving between coaches to increase his involvement.
Former Jets wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson has shared his perspective on the current struggles of Garrett Wilson with the team, urging patience for the young receiver and offering strategic advice to the coaching staff.
Johnson, who played for the Jets from 1996 to 2000, understands the challenges of being a prominent player on the team and the importance of offensive scheme in maximizing a player's potential. "I would just say, be patient," Johnson advised Wilson. "They gotta figure out how to utilize him a certain way."
If Wilson's low target numbers persist beyond the next few games, Johnson suggested a clear course of action involving direct communication between key members of the coaching staff. "If it continues beyond the next couple of games, then you gotta have a conversation with Aaron Glenn and Aaron Glenn gotta go have a conversation with [offensive coordinator] Frank Reich. And Frank Reich and [receivers coach Shawn] Jefferson need to figure out how to get him more involved if it continues over the next couple of games."
Johnson also directed specific advice towards offensive coordinator Frank Reich and receivers coach Shawn Jefferson. He emphasized the need to find creative ways to get Wilson the ball, even if it means altering his typical role or play designs. "Continue to try to figure out ways of getting him the football so he’s not taken out of the game," Johnson stated. "Try to figure out how to get the football to him in certain situations. Everything doesn’t have to be down the field. He could be at the line of scrimmage, it could be inside, put him in the slot, just move him around, getting free access."
The sentiment from Johnson suggests a belief that Wilson's potential is not being fully tapped into within the current offensive structure, and that strategic adjustments by the coaching staff could significantly improve his impact on the game. The advice highlights a collaborative approach needed to resolve the situation, focusing on player involvement and offensive innovation.
