The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew in London is preparing for a significant restoration of its renowned Palm House, a project set to begin in autumn 2027. The iconic Victorian glasshouse will be closed for an estimated period of up to four years to address structural issues caused by the humid environment.
The extensive restoration, with an estimated cost of £66 million, is necessary due to the cumulative effects of the hot and humid conditions on the building's ironwork and glass.
Before the restoration work can commence, the entire collection of approximately 1,300 tropical plants and trees housed within the structure must be relocated. This logistical challenge is a critical first step in the multi-year project.
