Kevin Durant Dismisses WNBA Transgender Debate, Focuses on League's Growth
The NBA star stated he is unconcerned with the debate surrounding gender eligibility in women's sports, prioritizing the WNBA's increasing success.
NBA veteran Kevin Durant has publicly distanced himself from the ongoing debate concerning gender eligibility in the WNBA. During Houston Rockets Media Day, Durant was pressed by reporters regarding the campaign led by former teammate Enes Kanter Freedom and former NBA player Royce White, which advocates for restricting biological men from competing in women's sports.
Durant, however, deflected the questions, choosing instead to highlight the WNBA's recent achievements, including lucrative sneaker deals and increased revenue. "All that stuff used to be noise, man. WNBA is flourishing," Durant stated. "Look what these women are doing. Look at the money they've made over the last few years. Look at visibility of their league. They got four or five signature athletes on major brands that represent major brands. These women have brands for themselves, the business women for themselves outside the game."
He further elaborated on his position, stating, "So a lot of that stuff, the politics that they bring into sports nowadays, I understand the message in behind what they're trying to do, but a person like me who just strictly cares for the purity of the sport, I do not give a f*** about none of that. I care about flourishing and pushing the league forward and that's what's happening right now."
Kanter Freedom and White have been vocal critics of the WNBA's gender eligibility policies, with White announcing his intention to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft after stating he would "identify as women." They argue that the league's current collective bargaining agreement lacks explicit language mandating that players be biological females.
The controversy escalated in August when Kanter Freedom was ejected from a Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever game after a verbal exchange with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. The incident led to Kanter Freedom receiving a venue ban, a stance supported by some players, including Los Angeles Sparks forward Cameron Brink.
Despite the ongoing friction, Durant's comments suggest a desire to focus on the positive trajectory of the WNBA rather than engaging with the contentious aspects of the gender eligibility debate.
