Kerry Kennedy Mourns Death of Niece Kyle Kennedy at 42

Heiress Kerry Kennedy has paid tribute to her niece, Kyle Kennedy, who died on September 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, at the age of 42. The death was announced on Tuesday.

Kyle Kennedy, a granddaughter of the late U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy and his wife Ethel Kennedy, was remembered by her aunt as "a bright light and gentle spirit, Kyle was a committed educator and devoted mother." Kerry Kennedy shared her grief on social media Wednesday morning, stating that her family has been left "heartbroken."

"Our hearts are with her children, her mother Vicki, her brother Michael and sister Rory," Kerry Kennedy wrote on X. "Kyle was the daughter of my beloved late brother Michael and Vicki Gifford Kennedy. May she rest in eternal peace among the angels with her father and daughter Josephine. We love and miss you, Kyle."

The late educator was a mother to three children: Conor Kerr, 12, and Declan Kerr, 10. Her third child, Josie Kerr, Conor's twin, died days after her birth in 2014. Kyle Kennedy married Liam Kerr in 2012.

Her cause and manner of death have not yet been revealed. According to her obituary, Kyle Kennedy suffered a severe spinal cord injury in 2020 that left her permanently paralyzed, though the details of the injury remain unclear.

Despite her challenges, her family stated that Kyle Kennedy "fought to maintain her dry wit and determination through it all, trying to be the best possible mother." She became a significant advocate for the disabled community, bringing accessibility issues to legislators' attention. In June 2025, she testified before the Massachusetts State Legislature regarding discrimination against individuals with disabilities in healthcare services.

Kyle Kennedy's professional life included teaching in the New York City public school system through Teach For America before she worked for tech companies to advance school curriculum. She was the daughter of Michael Kennedy, the niece of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and the great-niece of former President John F. Kennedy. Her mother, Victoria, is the daughter of the late NFL legend Frank Gifford.

Her passing adds to a history of losses within the Kennedy family, often referred to as the "Kennedy curse." Her father, Michael Kennedy, died in a skiing accident when she was 13. In 2019, Saoirse Kennedy Hill, a niece of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., died of a fentanyl overdose. In late 2025, Tatiana Schlossberg, a granddaughter of John F. Kennedy, died of acute myeloid leukemia.

An obituary described Kyle Kennedy as having lived a "naturally fast and competitive" life. She was known for outrunning peers on playgrounds and sports fields and developed a passion for long-distance running, completing the Boston Marathon in 2019. Her family noted that she continued to live through "paralysis, disability and medical challenges" after her 2020 injury, advocating for others and caring for her sons and her dogs.
