Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has called on Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to publicly disclose the current status of his health, citing constituent concerns over the senator's prolonged absence from the Senate.
In a letter sent to the 84-year-old senator, Beshear, a Democrat, stated that Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about McConnell's wellbeing and his ability to serve in the U.S. Senate. He emphasized the importance of transparency for public officials.
McConnell has been away from the Senate for three weeks and was hospitalized in early June for an undisclosed condition. Details regarding his health and a timeline for his return have been kept private by his office. Leaked emergency dispatch audio from June 14 indicated that McConnell was found "unconscious" and may have suffered a heart attack.
Amidst the lack of clarity, speculation has circulated online. McConnell's wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, traveled to China shortly after his hospitalization and remained there until recently. Her office stated that McConnell's health "did not warrant an immediate return to the U.S."
Despite his absence, McConnell has reportedly spoken with Senate Republican leadership, including Majority Leader John Thune and Majority Whip John Barrasso. They stated that they had discussed Senate business and recent Supreme Court decisions with him.
