Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has formally requested an update on the health of U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, who has been hospitalized for several weeks with few public details released by his office. In a letter shared by the governor's office, Beshear stated that Kentuckians are increasingly concerned about McConnell's well-being and his capacity to continue in his Senate role.
"As Governor, I request that you fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health," Beshear wrote. He emphasized that public officials have a commitment to their constituents to be transparent about their ability to serve, adding that he wished the senator a speedy recovery.
McConnell's office first confirmed his hospitalization on June 14 for an undisclosed condition. While his office has stated he is continuing his recovery in the hospital and has had phone conversations with Republican leaders, details have remained limited.
Beshear, a Democrat, and McConnell, a Republican, have differing political ideologies but have collaborated on some issues. Beshear noted last week that he had not received any updates regarding McConnell's condition. McConnell is not seeking reelection to his Senate seat this year, and his term is set to expire in January.
Should McConnell's seat become vacant, the governor would likely be responsible for calling a special election, though the timing could affect this process. Kentucky lawmakers have previously passed legislation preventing the governor from appointing a temporary replacement.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for McConnell's wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, stated that Chao was on a pre-planned trip to China to support family philanthropic initiatives. The spokesperson indicated that the senator's health did not necessitate Chao's immediate return to the United States during her trip.
