Kendrick Perkins Predicts Lakers Will Be League's Best Offensive Team
Former NBA champion analyst praises potential of Luka Doncic and new additions.
NBA analyst and former champion Kendrick Perkins has voiced a bold prediction for the Los Angeles Lakers' upcoming season, suggesting they will become the league's top offensive unit.
Perkins highlighted the potential of Luka Doncic, particularly his effectiveness in pick-and-roll situations, and noted that the duo of Doncic and Austin Reaves demonstrated a strong offensive net rating when on the court together last season without LeBron James. The addition of center Walker Kessler is also expected to enhance the Lakers' offensive capabilities.
"Luka is so great when he has a dynamic roller that loves to finish at the basket. But also, Luka is a different type of guy in the pick-and-roll," Perkins said on NBA Today. He drew a parallel to the synergy Doncic had with Daniel Gafford and Derek Lively, emphasizing the importance of teammates being ready to capitalize on his playmaking.
"I wanna see the [Lakers] develop that same energy that [Luka] had with Daniel Gafford and Derek Lively. They knew when Luka was in the pick-and-roll to always stay ready," Perkins added. "I believe the Lakers are going to have the best offensive team in the league."
The Lakers organization has entered a new phase following the departure of LeBron James. While questions may linger regarding the team's defense, which ranked 19th in defensive rating last season, allowing 114.6 points per game, the offense is anticipated to be a significant strength. The team is expected to feature more off-the-ball movement this season with several new players integrated into the roster. The effectiveness of these changes and their impact on the team's offensive performance will become clearer as the 2026-27 campaign unfolds.
