Kemi Badenoch Criticizes Labour's 'Tax Doom Loop,' Advocates for Lower Taxes

Kemi Badenoch delivered a strong critique of Labour's economic policies, warning of a "tax doom loop" that she claims is making Britain poorer. Speaking at the close of the Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, Badenoch outlined a vision for the country that she described as a "starkly Thatcherite alternative path."

She announced plans to reduce the burden on businesses hiring young people and signaled an intention to address inheritance tax, which she stated is impacting middle-class families. Badenoch framed the upcoming general election, potentially as early as next year, as a "battle for the soul of this nation."

Badenoch accused Labour of believing that economic growth is "created by politicians" and of wanting to "wind back the clock to failed ideas of the past." She asserted that Labour's approach, which she characterized as believing "government knows best," would ultimately make everyone poorer.

The Conservative Party has focused on reducing the size of the state to stimulate economic growth. Previous pledges from the party include an annual tax cut if they win power, and removing the "cliff edge" that affects high earners' eligibility for childcare support. The party has also targeted Net Zero red tape and quangos, while some members have advocated for increased defense spending and proceeding with Heathrow's third runway.

Badenoch emphasized the urgency of addressing the public finances, noting that Britain is in a "crazy" situation of borrowing billions annually to cover interest on a national debt approaching £3 trillion. She urged her party to make economic growth the "central organising principle" of their next government, stating, "We are running out of money and running out of time to put it right."
