Actor Kelsey Grammer expressed optimism about America's future, asserting that the nation's Founding Fathers provide enduring guidance for overcoming current divisions. Speaking ahead of the United States' 250th anniversary of independence, Grammer stars as aristocrat Thomas Fairfax in "Young Washington," a historical drama that explores George Washington's life before his presidency.
Grammer believes the principles and actions of the Founding Fathers offer a framework for preserving the American Dream and fostering national unity. "We need to look to them for the guidance that they have, that we have today, to become the great nation that they dreamed of," he stated. He emphasized that this dream is a unifying concept, focusing on equal opportunity rather than equal outcomes.
The actor, who is 71, has a long-standing connection to stories of America's founding era. His previous roles include Lt. Stewart in the 1984 CBS miniseries "George Washington" and a portrayal of Washington himself in the 2003 TV movie "Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor." He also hosted and executive produced Fox Nation's 2024 docudrama "George: Rise of a Revolutionary."
Grammer also hosted Fox Nation's "Historic Battles for America" series in 2022. Reflecting on his years of studying George Washington, he humorously mused about the enduring cherry tree anecdote, questioning the historical accuracy of the tale and its moral implications.
Lessons from the Past
Grammer previously suggested that contemporary politicians could learn from George Washington's approach, noting his disinclination towards "big government" and his focus on practical solutions for the populace. "He was humble enough to say, ‘I am not perfect, but I am not going to quit,’" Grammer said, expressing a desire to see such resolve in Washington, D.C.
"Young Washington," set to premiere on July 3, 2026, in conjunction with the nation's 250th anniversary, stars William Franklyn-Miller as the titular character and features Golden Globe winners Kelsey Grammer and Mary-Louise Parker, along with Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley.
Angel Studios, in partnership with the U.S. Department of State, announced that "Young Washington" will be screened at U.S. embassies globally. Neal Harmon, CEO of Angel Studios, stated that the film is a human story about growth, sacrifice, and leadership, and expressed honor in the partnership with the State Department.
Grammer, in a statement, shared his perspective on portraying Thomas Fairfax as a mentor who recognized Washington's potential. He hopes the film reminds international audiences that "freedom is not just an inheritance, but a responsibility to be carried forward by every generation."
