Actor Kelsey Grammer believes his conservative political views may have impacted his career opportunities in Hollywood, suggesting that casting directors might not even consider him for roles due to his long-held political stance. Grammer, who has publicly identified as a conservative for approximately 40 years, shared his suspicions in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.
"I suspect I may have, but I suspect I may be, you know, in that category where they just don't even think about me, so it’s okay," Grammer said when asked if he had ever lost a role because of his political beliefs. He speculated that the sentiment within parts of the industry could be, "Oh, we wouldn't work with him, he's a conservative."
Despite these concerns, Grammer expressed confidence in his professional abilities, stating, "I hope that's not the case because I'm actually pretty good at what I do." He added that while he declared his conservative views early in his career, industry insiders may now be accustomed to his political identity.
Grammer extended his thoughts on politics influencing Hollywood beyond casting decisions, touching upon awards ceremonies. He argued that performances should be the sole criterion for recognition, rather than political alignments. "There's always been sort of a popularity contest with awards anyway," he commented, suggesting that external factors can sway voting.
He also noted that some figures in the entertainment industry share his conservative views but choose to keep them private. "There's several of us in the closet," Grammer admitted, contrasting them with those who have left the profession entirely.
The actor also reflected on the state of television comedy, suggesting that modern sitcoms have lost touch with audiences. He attributed this to a perceived lack of trust in viewers and an overemphasis on political correctness, which he believes stifles humor derived from human behavior. "The idea of being too politically correct is probably killing the process, I think," Grammer stated, implying that comedic writing has taken a wrong turn by straying from relatable human experiences.
Grammer's career spans decades, with a breakout role as Dr. Frasier Crane on the sitcom "Cheers" leading to the highly successful spin-off "Frasier." The latter series earned him multiple Emmy Awards and solidified his status as a television icon. He has also lent his voice to characters in "The Simpsons" and appeared in films such as "Toy Story 2" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."
