Former Trump White House counselor Kellyanne Conway drew criticism for her description of President Donald Trump's July 3 speech on the National Mall.

Conway, a contributor on Fox News, called the speech "uplifting, optimistic, patriotic, I would say inclusive" and suggested Trump was "extending an olive branch to those that may not have voted for him but are Americans and he wants everybody to celebrate this incredible moment."

Critics on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, questioned Conway's assessment, with some suggesting her remarks indicated a disconnect from the speech's content or reality. Conway, who ran Trump's 2016 campaign and served in his administration, previously coined the phrase "alternative facts."

The content of Trump's speech, delivered ahead of the July 4th holiday, included remarks that were perceived as divisive. Within the first three minutes, Trump criticized the Biden administration, calling it "a total disaster" and "four years of incompetence," though he did not initially name his predecessor.

Trump also stated, "A short time ago, we were a dead country. We were dead. Now we’re the hottest country anywhere in the world. We’re respected by everybody. Nobody’s laughing at us anymore. Two years ago, they were laughing."

Further remarks in the speech touched on his opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, transgender athletes, and described what he called the "vandalized by thugs" alteration of the Reflecting Pool.

The speech's tone and content contrasted with Conway's description, as noted by observers who pointed to the divisive rhetoric that preceded Trump's remarks, including Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy's comments labeling musicians who canceled their participation as "libtards."
