Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos' New Dog Adoption Delayed by Health Issue
The TV couple's recently adopted puppy, Javi, is undergoing treatment for a parasite before he can join their family.
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos have encountered a setback in their recent dog adoption, as the puppy they welcomed to their family is experiencing a health issue. The couple announced live on air last week that they had officially adopted a puppy named Javi during the show's annual Adopt A Dog segment. However, the pup has a minor health concern that is delaying his arrival at their New York City home.
Consuelos explained that the puppy has a parasite and is currently receiving treatment. "So they're treating it and then he's going to come any day now," he stated. The exact nature of Javi's diagnosis or the specific type of parasite was not disclosed.
Last week, Consuelos brought the puppy, originally named Lucas, onto the set. The pup quickly settled in, even falling asleep on his lap during the show. Ripa remarked on Consuelos's demeanor, saying, "Mark walked into my dressing room this morning with Lucas in his arms, and I saw a different you. I saw a kinder, gentler you." Consuelos then suggested the name Javi, a shortened version of Javier, which he felt would be more fitting for the dog.
Initially, Ripa expressed mock concern about Consuelos naming the dog before official adoption, quipping, "This is trouble. He's naming this dog that we have not adopted." She mentioned they were planning to introduce him to their existing dog, Lena, a Maltese/Shih Tzu mix, after filming.
The following morning, Ripa and Consuelos confirmed the adoption, with Ripa announcing, "We have a new baby." The name Javi, however, remains a subject of debate within the family. Ripa shared that their three adult children—Michael, Lola, and Joaquin—feel entitled to a say in the dog's name, despite not living at home. "They have no vote," Consuelos agreed.
Javi's impending arrival marks a new chapter for the couple, who lost their 17-year-old Shih Tzu, Chewie, in February 2025. Ripa had previously mused that Chewie might have played a role in bringing Javi into their lives, thinking, "I bet Chewie sent Javi here for us."
