Kelly Clarkson Feud: Security Footage Emerges of Brooklyn Store Encounter
Newly released video shows the singer's brief visit to the Art of Play shop, the site of a dispute over a $15,000 mechanical bird.
Newly surfaced security footage from the Art of Play store in Brooklyn provides a visual account of the interaction between singer Kelly Clarkson and store staff that led to a public feud. The video, obtained by journalist Pablo Torre, captures Clarkson's four-minute, 50-second visit to the curiosity shop.
In the footage, Clarkson is seen entering the store and inquiring about "Molly," a $15,000 mechanical bird. The store has maintained that Molly was not for sale. Clarkson, dressed in a grey baseball hat, yellow t-shirt, and blue jeans, browses various items before approaching the bird. The video shows her appearing to speak with a shopkeeper, who then seems to point out items to her.
Clarkson is then seen returning an item she had considered buying and appearing to voice her complaints to a cashier before leaving the store. Torre noted that Clarkson's attire was similar to other shoppers, suggesting she was not singled out due to her appearance, as she had previously implied.
The incident escalated when Clarkson took to social media platform X to blast the store, comparing her treatment to that of Julia Roberts' character in the movie "Pretty Woman." She stated that she was "looked at as if I couldn't afford it" and was told the staff "could find something comparable for me."
Adam Rubin, the owner of Art of Play, stated that the store has received threats and harassment since Clarkson's social media posts. Rubin, who was recovering from skin cancer removal surgery at the time, expressed concern for his staff's safety. He also asserted that Molly was not for sale, despite a $15,000 price tag displayed next to the automaton, explaining that the tag was for an identical item not on display.
Rubin accused Clarkson of leveraging her fame and power to "squash somebody like a bug" and suggested her actions were an "abuse of power." He also recounted that Clarkson allegedly yelled at a shopkeeper on her way out, saying, "You know, I'm never coming here again."
Locals have voiced support for Rubin and his business, with some describing the situation as ridiculous and criticizing the use of a celebrity platform against a small business. Rubin noted that Molly has become an unexpected star of the online fallout and joked about her increased fame and potential value.
Clarkson gained fame after winning the first season of American Idol in 2002 and has since had a successful music career and hosted "The Kelly Clarkson Show."
