Kelly Clarkson Accuses Brooklyn Store of Discrimination, Prompting Police Call

Police were called to a Brooklyn design shop after a report of a disorderly person, a day after singer Kelly Clarkson publicly accused the establishment of discrimination. The incident occurred following Clarkson's social media post comparing her experience at the store to a scene from the 1990 film "Pretty Woman."

Clarkson, an "American Idol" winner, had shared on Saturday that she had "drove all the way to Brooklyn" to visit the shop, named Art of Play, with the intention of making several purchases. Referencing the iconic scene from "Pretty Woman," where Julia Roberts' character is scornfully rejected from a high-end retailer, Clarkson wrote, "But y’all should go check out Art of Play in Brooklyn if you enjoy being treated like Julia Roberts' character in Pretty Woman."

The shop, described as a "Brooklyn curiosity shop" that features a small theater, has focused on "wonder, tactile play, and eclectic novelties" as an antidote to "mindless scrolling." Its products range in price, with items like the Sisyphus Kinetic Art Table costing $4,100.

Art of Play stated that Clarkson had inquired about purchasing a decorative bird named 'Molly,' which is not for sale. The store has since been thrust into an uncomfortable spotlight following Clarkson's comparison, which has become one of Hollywood's enduring depictions of retail snobbery.

Clarkson has not elaborated further on the encounter, beyond her initial social media post. The police presence at the shop followed the online controversy and the store's own statement regarding the incident.
