The upcoming 'Live's Halloween Shockin' Eve' special is set to feature "more than one surprise guest," according to show executive producer Michael Gelman. The annual Halloween broadcast, hosted by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos, aims to outdo previous years with a slate of comedic skits, extensive costume changes, and celebrity appearances.
Gelman told DECIDER that while he couldn't reveal specific identities, he hinted that speculation about certain well-known figures was not entirely off the mark. "You may see a bunch of surprises," Gelman stated, emphasizing the "more than one surprise guest" aspect of the show.
The 'Halloween Shockin' Eve' theme, a play on 'New Year's Rockin' Eve,' will incorporate spoofs of popular television shows and viral trends. This year's special will include guest appearances from Andy Cohen, Zach Braff, Lisa Rinna, and Jerry O’Connell. The show is also noted for its rapid-fire costume changes, with Gelman mentioning sixty costume changes are planned. One particular segment Gelman highlighted as humorous is a skit paying homage to the reality competition series 'The Traitors.'
Gelman also discussed the show's recent embrace of its archives through a "Live Vault" segment, inspired by the growing online trend of nostalgia and retro content. He explained that the show, which has been on the air for 40 years, has a vast library of content that has recently gained significant online traction, including moments from 9/11 broadcasts and early segments about the iPhone.
Planning for the Halloween special begins early, with producers compiling lists and honing ideas throughout the year. Gelman noted that while the team tries to remain current with pop culture, some concepts are developed as early as August. Last-minute additions are possible, particularly for trending topics that emerge late in the season. Gelman also mentioned that some skits, even if deemed funny, might not make the final cut due to time constraints and may be released digitally.
He described the production of the Halloween show as having "high production value," with the most challenging aspects being idea generation, scriptwriting, and the execution of numerous costume changes. Gelman credited Ripa and Consuelos, both actors, for elevating the show's comedic performances. The show's producers are responsible for writing the skit scripts, with a dedicated team often handling the Halloween segments.
In addition to the main Halloween special, Gelman teased that 'Science Bob' is scheduled to appear for Halloween-themed experiments. The show also plans a Halloween-themed version of its "check-ins around the world" segments. 'Live's Halloween Shockin' Eve' is scheduled to air on Friday, October 30.
