Keith Urban, Celine Dion Lead Star-Studded Tribute to John Farnham
Legendary Australian singer John Farnham was unable to attend the tribute concert in Melbourne due to declining health.
Music stars including Keith Urban and Celine Dion gathered in Melbourne to honor Australian music icon John Farnham at a tribute concert held on Sunday evening at Rod Laver Arena.
Urban performed a rendition of Farnham's 1990s hit "Burn for You," while Dion, appearing via video link from Paris, sang "You're the Voice."
Other artists such as Jimmy Barnes, Human Nature, and members of Coldplay also participated, covering Farnham's well-known songs. Hugh Jackman also sent a video message and performance.
The concert was held to benefit the Lend Your Voice campaign, which aims to raise $1 million for Head and Neck Cancer Australia within the next year.
Farnham himself was not in attendance. His family announced that the singer is currently confined to a wheelchair and requires supplemental oxygen following his battle with mouth cancer. His son, James Farnham, shared an update on his father's health, stating that it has deteriorated and he now requires 24-hour nursing care at home.
"John has been deeply moved by everything happening this weekend around the tribute concert at Rod Laver Arena," James Farnham said in a statement. "The extraordinary work of the producers over these past few months, the generosity of all the artists giving their time, and the dedication of the crew and production teams working so hard to deliver this special concert. None of it is taken for granted by John or any of us, as a family."
He added that while the family had kept these health matters private, they felt it was important for fans to understand why Farnham could not attend the event. "If things were different, John would have loved nothing more than to attend," the statement continued. "As a family, we have decided that it is best for John to remain at home, where he can be safe and comfortable."
Entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins hosted the event, which also featured performances by Mahalia Barnes, Kate Ceberano, and Jessica Mauboy. Farnham's son, Rob Farnham, took to the stage to thank the performers and attendees on behalf of his father.
