Keith Hernandez Thrilled by Andy Green's Full-Time Mets Manager Hire

The New York Mets have officially named Andy Green as their full-time manager, signing him to a three-year contract. This decision has garnered enthusiastic support from Mets legend Keith Hernandez, who believes Green is the right fit to guide the team's developing core.

Green, who initially took over as interim manager mid-season after Carlos Mendoza's departure, was previously the franchise's vice president of player development. He had been expected to return to a front-office role, but with the blessing of his family, he accepted the full-time managerial position. Green brings previous managerial experience from his time with the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019, where he compiled a record of 274-366. As of Tuesday, his interim record with the Mets stood at 37-38.

Hernandez expressed his excitement, drawing parallels to former manager Davey Johnson and emphasizing the importance of a manager who can connect with and develop young players. "It's very important when you have young players that you have a manager that knows their abilities," Hernandez stated, adding that he admired Green's proactive approach in pushing both pitchers and position players. He believes Green's deep connection to the game and familiarity with the current Mets roster make him an ideal choice.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns highlighted Green's unique qualifications, noting his ability to bridge the gap between the front office and the dugout, as well as between the minor and major leagues. Stearns stated that Green provides the organization with much-needed continuity, stability, and belief.

Looking ahead, owner Steve Cohen indicated that the team plans to integrate additional experienced voices into the front office after the current season concludes.
