Veteran New York Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez did not hold back his criticism of Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Connor Thomas' performance on Monday night, describing the outing as "criminal" and stating he was "sick to my stomach."
Thomas entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with the score tied 3-3 at Citi Field. In just 2.2 innings of work, he surrendered 11 earned runs on 10 hits, including three home runs, and issued five walks. He retired only eight of the 23 batters he faced before being replaced by a position player on the mound.
"I'm sorry, I just think that's criminal what we just witnessed," Hernandez said during the broadcast. "Poor kid, you just want to give him a hug. Literally, I'm sick to my stomach. I'm not a happy camper."
The Mets went on to win the game 14-3. Hernandez, who has been a commentator for the Mets for nearly 30 years, expressed sympathy for Thomas, acknowledging that relievers are often asked to pitch longer than ideal to protect other arms in the bullpen.
This was Thomas' second appearance for the Braves this season. In his previous outing on July 7 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the 28-year-old allowed four runs, including one home run, in 3.2 innings.
