Kawhi Leonard has agreed to a two-year, $115 million contract extension with the Toronto Raptors, including a player option for the 2028-29 season. This agreement solidifies Leonard's future with the franchise.
Leonard is embarking on his second tenure with the Raptors, having previously played for the team during the 2018-19 season, which culminated in their first NBA championship. The extension follows a period of significant league sanctions against the Los Angeles Clippers, who were stripped of five first-round picks and fined $30 million for violating salary cap rules.
Following a $700,000 fine for his involvement in the Clippers' situation, Leonard was traded to the Raptors. The two-time Finals MVP recently shared his reasons for returning to Toronto, stating, "I’m not really championship chasing, trying to find the best team I could win [with]." He added that his family enjoyed their time in the city, his son was born there, and he has been considering a return for some time.
In Toronto, Leonard will join Scottie Barnes. The Raptors are poised for a strong playoff push after securing a top-five seed in the Eastern Conference last season.
