Katie Zacharia Ousted as Trump Press Secretary After Five-Day Tenure

Katie Zacharia's tenure as press secretary for former President Donald Trump concluded after only five days, with her ousting detailed following a difficult first week.

Zacharia's brief time in the spotlight began Tuesday when she delivered remarks in the White House briefing room and limited questions to three. By Friday, she was removed from the role. Earlier that day, while speaking with The Wall Street Journal in her new office, Zacharia was interrupted by senior adviser Jason Miller, who informed her that "JD wanted to chat." Zacharia excused herself from the interview and did not return. Trump later told reporters that he had suggested Zacharia reconsider the position.

"Is this for you Katie? Because honestly, you don’t need this," Trump recalled telling her, adding, "You don't have to do this if you don't want to." When asked about his confidence in her, Trump stated, "I don't know. We'll see. I'm gonna let her make that decision." He attributed the media's treatment of her to being "nasty."

Before news of her dismissal broke, Zacharia had expressed confidence to the Journal, stating there were "no staffing changes that are happening" and emphasizing her role in keeping the White House communications team cohesive. She also described herself as running on "no sleep and high adrenaline and probably too much caffeine and no food."

Zacharia's week was marked by controversy. Her initial 14-minute press briefing was widely criticized online, and even some Fox News hosts questioned her performance. Her background also came under scrutiny, particularly her claim of being a lawyer, which emerged to be inaccurate as she had not passed the bar exam. When questioned about this, Zacharia initially responded by saying she passed the exam "when I moved to China," later attempting to clarify the remark.

Despite the brief tenure, Zacharia issued a statement praising Trump. "President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and the most hardworking man," she said. "I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to. It was an honor to work for him."

White House communications director Steven Cheung confirmed Zacharia's departure, stating she would be "transitioning into a new role that will be announced at a later date." Reports also suggested that Susie Wiles played a role in Zacharia's ousting after Trump had bypassed Wiles in the hiring process.

A White House official, however, described reports of Zacharia's firing as "breathless speculation" and "fiction." "The fact is that Katie took on a very important job, and she will continue to support the President as she transitions to a new role. She is an amazing teammate and tremendous talent," the official stated.
