Katie Brown Departs Sunrise for Sports Commentary Return
The "Sunrise" reporter will transition to a hybrid role focusing on sports journalism after her current contract concludes.
Sunrise reporter Katie Brown is stepping back from her full-time role on the Australian breakfast television program "Sunrise" to pursue a return to sports journalism. Brown, 33, is expected to take on a hybrid role with Channel Seven, allowing her to focus more on sports broadcasting opportunities.
Brown has been a fixture on "Sunrise" since 2023, covering various events nationally and internationally. However, she is reportedly keen to return to her sporting roots, with her current contract set to expire at the end of the year. While she will no longer be a full-time host, she is expected to remain with Seven in a flexible capacity.
Her career has included a significant focus on rugby league, and she previously played for South Sydney's NSWRL Women's Premiership side, earning the players' player award in 2021. Before joining "Sunrise," Brown worked in sports journalism across regional television networks and led the NRL's website coverage for three years.
Brown has already begun transitioning to her new focus, appearing in a sideline capacity during Seven's Rugby League World Cup coverage in Perth. This assignment is seen as an opportunity to showcase her sports reporting and presenting skills.
Her move comes amid other shifts in breakfast television sports coverage. Danika Mason recently stepped away from presenting the sports desk on Nine's "Today" show to focus on the network's NRL coverage after maternity leave.
