Kathleen Turner Reacts to Michael Douglas's Memoir Admission of Affair
Turner expresses amusement and anticipation for Douglas's book detailing their past romance during filming of 'Romancing the Stone'.
Kathleen Turner has shared her reaction to her former co-star Michael Douglas's memoir, in which he admits to a past affair between them during the filming of the 1984 film "Romancing the Stone." Douglas, now married to Catherine Zeta-Jones, confessed in his book, "One Helluva Ride," that he and Turner, who was dating her future husband at the time, fell into a passionate relationship while working closely together.
Turner, now 72, stated that she "looks forward" to reading Douglas's book and finds the situation amusing after decades of speculation. "Good heavens, what a fuss about something 40 years ago! I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book," she commented.
Douglas, 82, wrote that he and Turner, then single, were immediately attracted to each other upon meeting. He described their connection as growing from their work, the pressure they were under, and their mutual respect and attraction. "Kathleen was smart, funny and sexy, with a deep sultry voice that became her signature. I instantly liked her and we were immediately attracted to each other," Douglas stated in his memoir. He detailed how their relationship developed from friendship and co-stars to lovers, involving clandestine meetings after long days of shooting in the jungle.
Their affair reportedly ended when Douglas's then-wife, Diandra Luker, became suspicious and visited the film set in Mexico with their young son. Douglas's marriage to Luker continued until their divorce in 2000, the same year he married Zeta-Jones. Douglas and Turner had maintained a "gentleman's agreement" never to discuss their relationship publicly, a pact they upheld for approximately 40 years. Douglas admitted in his memoir that their public denial of the affair was a lie intended to protect his wife and son.
Turner had previously alluded to the strong chemistry between them and a near-romance, recounting an incident where Douglas's wife's presence on set halted any further romantic developments. "The chemistry was there and Michael and I were both terrible flirts. We were in the jungle and I was feeling very romantic towards him. It was going to happen. Then I walked on set one day and his wife was suddenly there. She sat next to him and that was that. You don't mess with another woman's husband," she had said in a previous interview.
A Hollywood producer familiar with Douglas's career noted that the affair had long been a subject of Hollywood rumors, and Douglas's admission confirms them. The producer added, "you only have to watch the movie to know the sexual attraction was real."
