Katherine Ryan Apologizes for Comment on Victoria Beckham

Comedian Katherine Ryan has issued a public apology to Victoria Beckham after a remark made on the BBC satirical panel show "Have I Got News For You" led to upheld complaints.

The incident occurred in November 2025 when, during a discussion about David Beckham's alleged use of an offensive term in an email, Ryan seemingly linked the vulgarity to the former Spice Girl. Two viewers deemed the comment "gratuitously offensive," prompting an internal investigation by the BBC's Executive Complaints Unit (ECU).

The ECU ruled that while a fellow panelist's use of the term was justified as it referred to an alleged quote by David Beckham, there was no editorial justification for Ryan's subsequent comment about Victoria Beckham. The ruling stated, "There was no such justification for a comment which presented Victoria Beckham as equivalent to a particularly offensive word."

In response, Ryan, 43, posted a video on social media attributing the remark to her recent experience as a new mother, describing herself as suffering from "matrescence" and having a ten-day-old baby at the time. She acknowledged that while there was "no defence," she questioned whether she should have left the house. Ryan also noted the complexity of celebrity interactions, stating, "Sometimes I forget that celebrities are not my friends. If I had called Jimmy Carr a c, he wouldn't have minded."

Ryan shared that she had sent a private message to Victoria Beckham to clarify that it was "a stupid joke and I didn't mean any harm towards you at all." She also humorously commented on the BBC's description of the remark as a slur, as if "c***s" were part of a protected group.

This is not the first time the comedian has made sharp observations about public figures. Earlier in 2026, Ryan criticized Brooklyn Beckham, Victoria and David's son, calling him an "ungrateful nepo baby" for his public statements about his parents. On her podcast, "Telling Everybody Everything," she defended David and Victoria Beckham, suggesting Brooklyn needed to "grow up a little bit" and acknowledge the privileges his family name has afforded him.

Ryan has also previously commented on Meghan Markle, Queen's Counsel, questioning inconsistencies in her public narrative and describing her demeanor as "very manicured and very forced." Ryan expressed a preference for individuals who embrace their public roles rather than adopting a "humble" facade.

The comedian also weighed in on the affair scandal involving "The Apprentice" star Thomas Skinner, questioning his use of the word "forgotten" to describe his wife's reaction to his infidelity, and noting that such betrayals are rarely truly forgotten.

Additionally, Ryan addressed McFly singer Danny Jones's public display of affection with Maura Higgins, sarcastically remarking on men's tendency to "forget" their families when they leave the house.

Ryan's commentary extends to broader social observations, including her criticism of male comedians who spend extended periods away from their families while touring, contrasting their approach with her own method of touring "like a mum." She has also been critical of reality television shows featuring politicians, stating she would not watch programs that "glorify dangerous people" like Nigel Farage and Matt Hancock.

In another instance, Ryan sparked a debate with OnlyFans model Bonnie Blue regarding a stunt involving over a thousand men. While Ryan commented on the "desperate losers" in the queue for the event, she also defended Blue against public criticism, highlighting the double standard in focusing blame on the woman rather than the men involved.
