Kate Middleton's Hairstyles Seen as Diplomatic Signaling, Stylist Suggests
A royal stylist believes Catherine, Princess of Wales, strategically uses her hairstyles to convey subtle messages during public engagements.
Catherine, Princess of Wales, may be employing her hairstyles as a form of diplomatic communication, according to insights from a royal stylist. During a recent visit to Northern Ireland with Prince William, her hairdo was interpreted as a deliberate choice to acknowledge the region's heritage.
Stylist Susie Boyle suggested that the Princess of Wales, 44, has honed the art of "diplomatic hairdressing," carefully selecting styles that may carry deeper meanings. Boyle noted that specific hairstyles can send both personal and more formal messages.
During the Northern Ireland visit, the Princess's hair was styled into a Celtic knot. Boyle stated that this choice demonstrates Catherine's attention to detail, even in seemingly minor aspects of her public appearances. This style was seen as a nod to the country's heritage and the intricate patterns associated with Celtic art.
Boyle also pointed to previous occasions where Catherine's hairstyles appeared to convey specific messages. When the Princess attended the Irish Guards' St. Patrick's Day Parade at Mons Barracks in March, her hair was styled in an elegant updo. This particular style was described as a nod to Irish folklore, with Boyle comparing a similar knotted updo from a 2025 St. Patrick's Day parade to the Celtic Trinity Knot.
Furthermore, Boyle noted that changes in the Princess's hair color, such as a lighter honey-blonde shade first observed in 2024, could also be interpreted as subtle personal messages. The stylist's observations suggest that the Princess of Wales's public image extends to meticulous attention to her appearance, with hairstyles serving as a potential medium for unspoken communication.
