Kate Gosselin's Estranged Son Claims She Forced Children to 'Act Happy' Under Threat
Collin Gosselin details alleged strict rules and punishments in his new memoir, 'In the Shadow of Eight.'
Collin Gosselin, estranged son of television personality Kate Gosselin, has detailed alleged strict rules and harsh consequences imposed by his mother during their childhood, as depicted in his new memoir, "In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood." The book, released Tuesday, claims that Kate Gosselin commanded her eight children to "act happy" while filming their TLC reality show, "Jon and Kate Plus 8," with threats of punishment for non-compliance.
According to Collin, the children were told, "behave, act happy, smile." He recounts that if any of them became overwhelmed and showed it, their mother would allegedly lean in and whisper, "Smile." Collin, who was a toddler when the show began, recalls instances where his mother would punish normal toddler behavior, such as fighting over a toy. In one such incident, after he hit his brother Aaden, Collin alleges he was sent to a corner to sit with his nose against the wall, with the rest of the family instructed to pretend he wasn't there.
Further alleged strict rules extended to personal hygiene and cleanliness. Collin claims the children were only allowed a "tiny dot" of shampoo and were punished if their clothes got stained. Even deodorant application had specific, minimal instructions: "one swipe up, one swipe down."
The memoir also touches upon the tense atmosphere on set, with Collin stating that production members would fall silent around his mother due to her reportedly harsh demeanor. He alleges Kate was particularly critical of him, often commenting on his smile and behavior.
Collin's account details a particularly volatile incident involving his parents, Jon and Kate Gosselin, during which he and his siblings reportedly hid behind a doorframe, overwhelmed by the raw anger emanating from the argument.
Kate and Jon Gosselin divorced in 2009, and Jon subsequently lost custody of their eight children. The show was rebranded as "Kate Plus 8" and continued until 2017. Collin has been estranged from his mother since 2016, when, at age 11, she sent him to a behavioral health institution. He alleges this was due to his being violent and exhibiting unpredictable behavior, though he now claims this was a result of the environment created by his mother.
Three years later, Jon Gosselin gained legal and physical custody of Collin, bringing him home from the institution. Jon also later gained custody of Hannah Gosselin, one of Collin's sextuplet siblings, after she left Kate's home. The remaining sextuplets—Joel, Alexis, Leah, and Aaden—along with their older twin sisters, Mady and Cara, reportedly continue to live with Kate and remain estranged from Jon and Collin.
Collin previously announced his memoir in June, promising to expose what he described as the "shocking facade of his picture-perfect family." In response to his son's claims and the memoir's release, Kate Gosselin has publicly called Collin "mentally ill" and stated she is being "constantly disparaged and lied about" by him. Despite these denials, a source told Page Six that Kate is "nervous" about the book's release, viewing any child who speaks out as a "traitor."
When asked if he had a message for his mother regarding the memoir, Collin responded with a laugh, "Well, if she does, ‘Hey, Mom!’ Hope you enjoy."
