Kate Gosselin has publicly defended herself against allegations made by her estranged son, Collin, who is preparing to release a memoir detailing his childhood experiences. Gosselin, responding to comments on her social media posts, has denied Collin's claims that she "pitted them against each other" and "forced" her eight children apart.

In her TikTok comment responses, Gosselin stated that her status as a public figure prevents her from pursuing legal action for defamation. "I can’t bc I’m a public figure. Rules are different unfortunately. Or I def would!" she wrote in response to a fan's suggestion to sue. She further explained that she consulted an attorney who advised that "the courts don’t honor it if you’re in the public eye."

Gosselin also commented on the difficulty of proving malice and suggested that only parents with a "mentally ill child" could understand her situation.

Collin Gosselin has reiterated his allegations, claiming on his Instagram stories that his mother used to hit him and would write in her diary about needing to "pray to God to stop hitting me" when he was two years old. He stated that bringing these experiences to light is important.

Collin first publicly spoke out about his estrangement from his mother in 2022, telling Entertainment Tonight that she sent him to the Fairmount Behavioral Health System, a psychiatric facility, when he was 12 years old, without informing the rest of the family. Gosselin stated she sent him there due to a diagnosed behavioral disorder, but Collin alleged in a 2023 Vice documentary that he was sent to the facility to prevent him from revealing her "abusive" behavior.

After spending two years at the facility, Collin moved to live with his father, Jon Gosselin, from whom Kate Gosselin has been divorced since 2009. Jon Gosselin was awarded full custody of Collin in December 2018. Collin, along with his sister Hannah, now lives with their father and remains estranged from most of his siblings and his mother.

Collin's memoir, titled "In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood," is scheduled for release in October. He shared the book cover, which depicts him as a child with his mother covering his mouth, and wrote that writing the book helped him find his voice and share his lived experiences, which he had previously kept private due to fear and uncertainty about being believed.
