Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway apologized to viewers on Monday's broadcast before being taken off air due to a loss of her voice. The 59-year-old broadcaster struggled with a hoarse throat throughout the live ITV show, with co-anchor Susanna Reid later informing viewers that Garraway had gone home and would be replaced by journalist Faye Barker.
Before commencing the news segment, Garraway addressed the audience, stating, "I must apologize to you, I'm so sorry. I'm in absolutely no pain, I don't feel unwell, but I talked way too much last week." She humorously compared her voice to that of singer Barry White, hoping it would not hinder understanding of the day's stories.
During a report from Glasgow, journalist Jonathan Swain offered Garraway a cough sweet upon his return to London. After handing back to co-hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls, they questioned Garraway about her voice.
Susanna Reid speculated whether Garraway's voice issues stemmed from her singing performance at the National Television Awards the previous week, where she performed "I Know Him So Well" as a tribute. Ed Balls jokingly suggested excessive Saturday night karaoke, which Garraway denied.
"I was talking and singing last week! I lost my voice on Friday and Saturday night," Garraway explained. She quipped that perhaps her vocal strain was the result of a potential Christmas album collaboration with singer Aled Jones.
Garraway reassured viewers that despite the sound of her voice, she was not experiencing pain. When asked by Reid for advice on dealing with a hoarse voice, weather presenter Laura Tobin suggested hot water with honey and lemon, and refraining from talking. Garraway responded with a laugh, "Not in my nature, Laura!"
Later in the program, Reid announced Garraway's departure: "As you may have noticed earlier this morning, Kate Garraway had a very hoarse voice; she was belting it out at the National Television Awards last week, and her voice has not fully recovered. So, we have put her on vocal rest, and Faye Barker has valiantly come to the rescue and is here with the rest of this morning's news."
Faye Barker then humorously remarked, "Morning, amazing who you can find in a cupboard at ITN when needed!" before proceeding with the news.
