Kate Ferdinand recently celebrated her daughter Shae's third birthday with a festive trip to Disneyland Paris. The event took place while her husband, former professional footballer Rio Ferdinand, was in the United States for six weeks, working at the World Cup.
Ferdinand, 35, shared moments from the celebration on her Instagram account, showcasing a carousel of pictures from the theme park. One image featured Ferdinand posing with Mickey Mouse, highlighting her abs in a polka-dot crop top. The collection also included a clip of her children enjoying a performance with characters from Disney's Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog. She concluded the post with a black-and-white photograph of her children holding hands.
In her Instagram caption, Ferdinand described the day as "magical," noting that her children were "very, very tired but happy." She also shared a more personal reflection on Instagram Stories, referring to Shae as her "crazy, funny, sassy, boisterous, strong-willed 3-year-old princess." Ferdinand recalled that Shae had been in the NICU shortly after birth in July 2021 due to congenital pneumonia, a condition that can cause respiratory distress in newborns.
Ferdinand has previously spoken about the emotional challenges of her daughter's early health struggles, including the "mum guilt" she experienced. After five days in the hospital, both Kate and Shae were discharged.
The Disneyland trip occurred as Ferdinand navigated solo parenting, managing their children—stepchildren Tate, 17, and Tia, 14, along with their son Cree, 4, and daughter Shae—while Rio was away. She shared glimpses of her efforts to maintain family life, including a countdown chart for Rio's return and images of her children engaged in activities and watching a football match. Ferdinand also mentioned attempting to balance her work schedule with family responsibilities and finding time for exercise.
Ferdinand has also been open about her journey in building a blended family. She and Rio began their relationship in 2017, two years after the death of his first wife. Ferdinand moved into the family home in 2018 and married Rio the following year. She discussed the complexities of her role as a step-parent on her podcast, "Blended," where she and Rio recently had a candid conversation with Tate.
During the podcast, Tate recounted his initial difficulties adjusting to Kate's presence, admitting he used to "hate" her and would lie to his father in an effort to sabotage their relationship, driven by loyalty to his late mother. He described a period of "jealousy" and "mind games" where he would oscillate between affection and estrangement towards Kate.
Kate Ferdinand also shared anecdotes, such as an incident where a delivery for Rio led Tate to falsely accuse her of meeting men on the driveway. Another instance involved a Valentine's Day balloon delivery, which Tate alleged escalated into Kate locking the children in a room, causing Ferdinand significant distress and leading to questions from others about her actions.
Tate explained his confusion and admitted to feeling guilty for liking Kate while also feeling a sense of loyalty to his mother. He stated that he felt "stuck in no man's land for a couple of years" before fully embracing Kate's role in his life. The family also touched upon Rio's grief following his first wife's death and how he "shut down" emotionally, impacting his children.
Kate emphasized that there is no competition between her and Tate's late mother, acknowledging her unique position as a step-parent. She recalled Tate's gradual acceptance, noting a shift when he began referring to her as "that's my step-mum."
