Kat Dennings Refused to Film 'Broke Girls' Scene as Demanded by Showrunner
The actress told the showrunner she wasn't paid enough for a scene where she and co-star Beth Behrs were to appear in bras.
Kat Dennings revealed that she refused to film a scene for the CBS sitcom "2 Broke Girls" in which she and co-star Beth Behrs were to appear wearing only bras. The actress shared the anecdote in a TikTok video, recalling the incident occurred during the show's first or second season.
Dennings explained that after a table read for the episode, she approached showrunner Michael Patrick King. "I’m gonna need you to take out the bra scene, or have us wearing clothes during the scene," she recalled saying. According to Dennings, King initially responded, "No I mean, this is the scene." The actress then stated, "You don’t pay me enough for a bra scene," after which the scene was removed.
At the time, Dennings noted she did not have significant leverage to make demands, stating she "didn’t have a lot of pull" and that she and Behrs were "young and very lucky to be on a show that was successful."
"2 Broke Girls" aired on CBS from 2011 to 2019, running for six seasons and over 130 episodes. The series premiere in 2011 attracted nearly 20 million viewers. The show centered on Max (Dennings) and Caroline (Behrs), two waitresses in a Brooklyn diner who become friends and roommates.
Dennings, who married musician Andrew W.K. in 2023, has previously spoken about her experiences with body image in Hollywood. In a January interview, she recounted being told by casting directors that she was "not pretty enough and you’re fat" at 12 years old. Earlier this week, following the show's 15th anniversary, Dennings posted on Instagram that she and Behrs both left the show with "PTSD but also money so that’s nice!"
