Convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony appeared in a Collin County courtroom Wednesday, where his legal team successfully argued for the recusal of the judge who presided over his trial. The development is part of an ongoing effort to secure a new trial for Anthony, who was found guilty of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf in April 2025.

Anthony, 19, presented a noticeably different appearance from his June trial. His legal team attributed the changes to him "going through puberty and maturing." During the trial, Anthony had a clean-cut appearance, but by Wednesday, he sported facial hair and had shaved his head, a change noted in his booking photo after his conviction. His lawyer, Lee Merritt, who is advising the pro bono legal team, told the Daily Mail that Anthony looked "thinner, a little bit more mature, a little more facial hair."

Jeff Metcalf, Austin Metcalf's father, suggested that Anthony's appearance during the trial was a strategic choice to elicit sympathy. "Of course he did. They tried to make him look a little boy during trial," Metcalf told the Daily Mail, recalling how potential jurors had expressed reservations about sending someone of Anthony's apparent age to prison for an extended period.

Jurors ultimately convicted Anthony of murder and sentenced him to 35 years in prison after deliberating for less than three hours. However, within days of the verdict, Anthony's new legal team began proceedings to appeal the conviction, citing alleged violations of his rights.

The effort to obtain a new trial saw a significant victory when Judge John Roach was removed from further appeal proceedings. Anthony's lawyers argued that Roach had violated legal impartiality rules by giving interviews and making public statements after Anthony had already filed for an appeal. A visiting judge ruled in favor of the recusal, leading to cheers from Anthony's supporters gathered outside the courthouse. A new judge will be assigned for Thursday's hearing on the retrial request.

"His hair was gone so that added to it. He made the decision to shave his hair," Merritt also explained regarding Anthony's altered appearance. "This is a young man going through puberty and maturing through this process," he added.

While the recusal of Judge Roach was seen as a win for the defense, the argument for a retrial on Thursday is considered a long shot. Legal observers note that judges are typically reluctant to overturn jury verdicts without compelling reasons. The hearing may also serve to formally document the defense's complaints for a future appeals court.

Jeff Metcalf expressed that a retrial would be a painful ordeal for his family. "It's like carrying an open wound, you know? It's like, well, it was almost healed, but rip off the Band Aid and rip off the scab with it. And it opens a new wound again. So, it starts the healing process again from zero," he stated.
