A private conversation scandal from 2018, known as 'Ubergate,' has emerged as a potentially prophetic event preceding Karl Stefanovic's departure from Channel Nine eight years later. The controversy, which involved a secretly recorded private conversation, now appears to have foreshadowed the seasoned broadcaster's exit from the network following scrutiny over his podcast interview with British far-right figure Tommy Robinson.

The 'Ubergate' incident occurred when an Uber driver allegedly recorded a private conversation between Stefanovic, his brother Peter Stefanovic, and Peter's wife Sylvia Jeffreys. The recording, which was later published, purportedly captured Karl Stefanovic making critical remarks about some of his colleagues at Nine, including then-co-host Georgie Gardner, entertainment editor Richard Wilkins, and network management.

This leak triggered a significant media reaction, leading both Karl and Peter Stefanovic to issue public apologies. At the time, Karl Stefanovic stated, "Pete and I were guilty of having a spray after a Sunday BBQ. We talk a hundred times a day and hardly ever about work. Mainly about his terrible golf. But we did and the conversation was recorded. And we are sorry." He also clarified his remarks about Georgie Gardner, calling her "the best thing to happen to the show in years." Stefanovic also joked about taking taxis in the future, a detail that has gained new significance.

Months after the 'Ubergate' incident, Stefanovic reflected on the controversy during an appearance on The Kyle and Jackie O Show. He accepted responsibility, stating, "Whatever comes out of my mouth I'm responsible for, and if that brings the company into disrepute, that's on me. I accept full responsibility."

During that same interview, radio host Kyle Sandilands offered advice that has since gained prominence. Stefanovic recalled Sandilands telling him, "Mate, I don't think it's a big deal. You have to say sorry… but when you're losing advertisers, that's when you've gotta worry."

These words appear to have taken on new significance in the context of Stefanovic's recent exit from Nine. His departure followed intense scrutiny over his podcast interview with Tommy Robinson. An online activist group, Mad F***ing Witches, reportedly launched a campaign urging viewers to boycott Stefanovic and encouraging advertisers to withdraw their support. This group had previously targeted The Kyle and Jackie O Show, successfully lobbying advertisers over comments made by Sandilands.

Amidst speculation about a potential reunion project between Stefanovic and Sandilands, domain names such as kyleandkarl.com.au and karlandkyle.com.au have reportedly been registered by Sandilands' company, King Kyle Group Pty Ltd. Sources suggest the two broadcasters have been discussing such a possibility for some time, with one insider describing the idea as "a no-brainer" given their prominence in broadcasting.
