Karl Stefanovic has resigned from Channel Nine following backlash from a controversial interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson. The host, who had been with the network for approximately 25 years, declared himself "free" in a video posted online after his departure.
Stefanovic's resignation came after he uploaded a contentious interview with Robinson to his YouTube channel podcast, "The Karl Stefanovic Show," and then deleted it hours later amid widespread criticism. Nine Entertainment stated that Stefanovic could not continue hosting "Today" concurrently with his independent podcast.
Sources indicate that Stefanovic and Nine have reached an undisclosed six-figure settlement as part of his termination package, avoiding a potential legal dispute. Stefanovic's original contract had six months remaining, with payments exceeding $1 million.
Reports suggest that Stefanovic's prospects at rival networks are limited, with Channel 7 and Network Ten reportedly ruling out the possibility of hiring him. An Australian report suggested that Stefanovic may not appear on Australian commercial television again.
In his online video, Stefanovic thanked his "Today" show co-host Sarah Abo and the rest of the team, expressing gratitude for his 21 years on free-to-air television and emphasizing the importance of "freedom of speech."
