Karl-Anthony Towns Willing to Take Pay Cut to Keep Knicks Championship Core Intact

Karl-Anthony Towns has stated his willingness to accept a pay cut to ensure the New York Knicks' championship-winning roster remains together. This declaration comes as the team prepares to celebrate its first NBA title in 53 years, with Towns' contract status a prominent topic of discussion.

During an interview with ESPN's Malika Andrews, Towns explained his stance, emphasizing team cohesion as his primary goal. "Because I want this team to stay together," Towns said when asked about taking less money. "That’s always been my main priority was to keep everyone here, to keep this core, this special team that we have. So it was the first thing on my mind as soon as it was. And there was nowhere in mind a max was even thought of."

Knicks teammate Jalen Brunson, present during the interview, humorously responded to a question about his hopes for Towns' contract situation by saying, "Sign the contract." Both players shared a laugh.

Towns is entering the final guaranteed year of his current contract. He was a key contributor to the Knicks' championship run last spring, averaging 15.9 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.

The Knicks organization announced earlier in the month that contract extension talks with Towns would be paused until later in the season, a decision that came as a surprise to the player. "Obviously very disappointed, to say the least. Let’s be honest here," Towns commented on Sunday. "But even though there was no business done, there’s still business to be handled. After 53 years, we found a way to bring this trophy back to New York, and we intend for it to stay in New York."

The Knicks are scheduled to open their season on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden. A championship ceremony will be held prior to their game against the 76ers.
