Karen Spencer Buys $3.6 Million Mansion Near Althorp Estate Post-Divorce
Former Countess of Althorp settles into a new luxury property following her split from Earl Spencer.
Karen Spencer, the former Countess of Althorp, has purchased a £3.6 million mansion in Northamptonshire, England, a few miles from the Althorp estate she once called home. The social entrepreneur finalized the purchase using funds from her divorce settlement following the dissolution of her 13-year marriage to Earl Spencer in 2024.
The six-bedroom property, described by estate agents as a "remarkable country estate that epitomizes luxury and refined living," is situated on the edge of a picturesque village. The newly acquired mansion blends modern comfort with classic architectural design and sits within acres of parkland, featuring amenities such as a heated swimming pool, an all-weather tennis court, and outdoor dining areas. Unlike the 500-year-old Althorp, this house was built in the current century.
Following her separation from Earl Spencer, who has since married archaeologist Professor Cat Jarman, many speculated that Karen Spencer would leave the UK. However, she has established a new life in close proximity to her former marital home.
Spencer, 54, had moved to Althorp in 2011 after meeting Earl Spencer on a blind date in Los Angeles. Her previous marriage was to Hollywood producer Mark Gordon. Initially dividing her time between Althorp and a home in Southern California, she eventually relocated permanently, dedicating herself to the restoration and renovation projects at the historic estate.
Karen Spencer became a notable figure on social media, sharing her experiences managing the Althorp estate. Her supporters expressed dismay at her departure, praising her efforts in preservation. After the split, she faced challenges finding temporary accommodation for her extensive menagerie, which included horses, sheep, cats, and dogs. She announced her intention to embark on a "next chapter" in November 2024, eventually moving into temporary housing before purchasing her new home in August 2025.
Meanwhile, Earl Spencer and Professor Cat Jarman, now his fourth wife, have settled into Althorp. Jarman, an expert on the Viking age, met Earl Spencer five years prior during an archaeological dig on the Althorp estate. Their relationship developed from colleagues to a romantic partnership, with the couple marrying in Sedona, Arizona, in May of the current year. The couple has acknowledged the adjustment period for Jarman, who comes from Norway and is not accustomed to the British aristocracy.
The divorce proceedings between Earl Spencer and Karen Spencer were marked by legal disputes. Karen Spencer had sued Cat Jarman for misuse of private information, alleging an affair dating back to late 2022. The High Court heard that Karen Spencer confronted Cat Jarman via email in May 2024. Cat Jarman's lawyers denied the allegations, and Earl Spencer also denied claims that he ended his marriage via text. The legal proceedings were settled in April of the current year, with Earl Spencer reportedly incurring significant legal costs.
Karen Spencer chose to retain her title of Countess, a distinction not held by Earl Spencer's previous wives. She continues her philanthropic work, focusing on child welfare and sustainability through her charity, Whole Child International.
