A Kansas woman has been sentenced to life in prison for her role in the death of Fairway Police Officer Jonah Oswald, who was killed in August 2023 while attempting to arrest her and another suspect.

Andrea Rene Cothran, 35, received the sentence Wednesday in Johnson County, Kansas, for her involvement in the events that led to Oswald's death. Prosecutors argued that Cothran was legally responsible for the officer's death, even though she did not fire the fatal shot. Judge Michael Joyce stated during sentencing that Cothran had multiple opportunities to cease her actions before the incident escalated.

Cothran was found guilty in May of felony murder, battery of a law enforcement officer, fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer, theft, and reckless driving. She will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of 25 years and will serve her sentence in the Kansas Department of Corrections.

Officer Oswald, 29, was responding to a report of a stolen vehicle on August 6, 2023. Cothran, who was driving the stolen car, led law enforcement on a chase before crashing into a QuikTrip convenience store in Mission, Kansas. Cothran and a second suspect, Shannon Marshall, were apprehended inside the store. Marshall was shot by law enforcement during the arrest attempt and died at the scene. Officer Oswald died the following day from his injuries.

Under Kansas law, individuals can be convicted of first-degree murder if a death occurs during the commission of or flight from certain inherently dangerous felonies.

Oswald, an officer with four years of experience, is survived by his wife, Hannah, and their two young children. Fairway Police Chief J.P. Thurlo described Oswald as an "amazing" officer and noted the deep loss felt by the department and the community. Chris McMullin, chief deputy district attorney in Johnson County, called the sentencing the "the end of a long journey" for all involved.

Evidence presented during Cothran's trial included dash camera and surveillance footage, as well as Oswald's body camera video from inside the QuikTrip and Cothran's interrogation.
