Kansas State Student Survives 70-Foot Fall From Overpass

A Kansas State University junior, Kyra Kinnison, 21, survived a fall of approximately 70 feet from an overpass after swerving to avoid a truck on Kansas Highway 18. The incident occurred Friday night near Ogden.

Kinnison and her boyfriend, Dalten Grabast, were traveling in separate vehicles when a large insulation pallet fell from a truck, blocking the roadway. Grabast swerved to avoid the debris and stopped his car. Kinnison, who had pulled over, then reportedly attempted to avoid being struck by an oncoming truck and fell backward off the bridge. She landed on a tree, sustaining fractures to her back, pelvis, and tailbone.

Her friend, Sara Celeen, a dairy science senior at K-State and creator of a GoFundMe fundraiser for Kinnison, stated that Kinnison is recovering well. "I'm just glad she's not paralyzed for life," Celeen told WIBW. Kinnison has undergone surgery to realign her hips. Celeen shared an update indicating Kinnison is in good spirits and recovering, noting the improbable nature of her survival.

In a separate incident, Kristin Sargent, a 21-year-old University of Georgia student, also recently survived a fall from the eighth floor of an apartment building in Athens, Georgia, after dancing on a sofa near an open window.
