Kansas Soccer Field Tragedy: Dispatch Audio Reveals Mass-Casualty Response
Emergency calls detail the chaotic moments following a driver's alleged collision with a youth soccer event, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Newly released dispatch audio captures the frantic efforts of first responders arriving at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, after a driver allegedly plowed into a youth soccer game. The incident was immediately classified as a mass-casualty incident (MCI) by dispatchers.
The collision claimed the lives of 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both residents of McPherson. Ten other individuals, including five children, sustained injuries.
The 34-year-old female driver, who was taken into custody at the scene, was later released pending toxicology results and an examination of her Chevrolet pickup truck. Police have not yet indicated whether criminal charges will be filed. She had two children in the vehicle with her, one of whom was playing soccer on a different field at the complex.
Investigators have interviewed the driver and over 30 witnesses, including the two children who were present in the pickup truck during the incident. The Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office was consulted before the driver's release.
A 30-minute log of the dispatch communications highlights the response to the event. First responders reported at least 11 patients on scene, with two described as critical. Another report detailed nine patients, including two described as "code blacks" and two as "code blues," indicating severe medical emergencies, while others were still being triaged. The incident was designated a Level 3 MCI, described as "a motor vehicle accident into a bunch of pedestrians."
Audio logs also mentioned a 5-year-old victim who suffered multi-system trauma. The child was assessed with a Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15, indicating full responsiveness at the time. More than 30 minutes into the recording, a responder noted, "There's another victim in the middle of the field."
Following the tragedy, the City of Wichita announced that its public works division will install temporary barriers at key locations within the Stryker Sports Complex. Permanent solutions will be assessed later. The city will also review security measures at the complex. Police presence is planned for the upcoming weekend, with mental health professionals available to support affected families.
McPherson Mayor Jim Loving expressed the community's grief and solidarity with the victims' families, thanking bystanders and first responders. Wichita Police stated that the investigation is active and ongoing, and updates will be shared as they become available.
