Kansas Democrats have nominated Rev. Adam Hamilton to challenge incumbent Republican Sen. Roger Marshall in the November general election. Hamilton, the frontrunner in the Democratic Senate primary, secured the party's nomination, while Marshall is projected to win the Republican primary, according to ABC News projections.

Hamilton, leader of one of the largest United Methodist Churches in the country, launched his campaign in April. He initially considered running as an independent, a move that drew criticism from the state's Republican party. Hamilton's campaign reported raising approximately $3.6 million in the first quarter and secured endorsements from prominent Democrats, including Sen. Tim Kaine and former Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius.

Marshall, a physician and Army reserves veteran, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2016 and subsequently won a Senate seat in 2020, defeating Democratic nominee Barbara Bollier by 11 points. The Cook Political Report rates the general election race as "Solid Republican," noting that no Democrat has won a U.S. Senate seat in Kansas since 1932.

Despite the historical challenges, Kansas Democrats express optimism about unseating Marshall amid concerns over economic issues, particularly tariffs and rural healthcare. These concerns are amplified in a midterm election year where former President Donald Trump's favorability ratings have declined.

In the gubernatorial race, Ty Masterson is projected to win the Republican nomination. Masterson, the state Senate president, received an endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Masterson's victory follows a trend of Trump-backed candidates winning primary races in other states. He also garnered support from Sen. Roger Marshall, former Kansas GOP Governor Jeff Colyer, Kansans for Life Political Action Committee, and the National Rifle Association. Republicans are aiming to secure the open governor's seat, currently held by outgoing Democratic Governor Laura Kelly. In 2024, Trump carried Kansas by a 16-point margin.

Voters cast their ballots in the primaries on August 4, 2026.
