Kane Joins Shilton in England Cap Record
Striker Harry Kane makes 125th appearance for England, equalling Peter Shilton's long-standing record.
Harry Kane has reached a significant milestone in his England career, equalling Peter Shilton's record of 125 caps for the Three Lions. The Bayern Munich striker achieved this landmark during England's Nations League match against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.
Kane, who has already established himself as England's all-time leading scorer with 89 goals in 124 appearances, began his international career by scoring just 79 seconds into his debut. Despite being 33 years old, he continues to be a pivotal player for both club and country.
From Goalkeeper to Goalscorer
The journey to this record began unconventionally. As a six-year-old, Kane first trialled with Ridgeway Rovers, a youth club that had previously produced David Beckham. Initially, the coaches believed they had found a promising goalkeeper due to his impressive saves during a shooting session. However, his true talent lay in scoring goals.
"We give him some gloves, and he performs heroics - makes some fantastic saves," recalled former Ridgeway Rovers coach Dave Bricknell. "He's tipping it round the post, tipping a couple over the bar. I'm thinking this is great, we've got a goalkeeper. And then this woman came up to me and said he's better on the pitch." Once moved to outfield, Kane "smacked goals in left, right and centre" and became their centre-forward.
Kane's prolific goalscoring at youth level for Ridgeway Rovers and his district side attracted the attention of professional clubs. Both Arsenal and Watford considered him, but ultimately decided against signing him. Alex Welsh, a former academy coach at Arsenal, noted Kane's strong desire to score goals, which he believes contributes to his clinical finishing as a striker. "He intuitively knows what the goalkeeper doesn't like. He shoots early when the goalkeeper's not set," Welsh observed.
A Dedicated Youngster
At school, Kane was recognized not only for his footballing ability but also for his all-around athletic talent and strong work ethic. His PE teacher at Chingford Foundation School, Mark Leadon, described Kane as a "technically very gifted" player from an early age, who was also a capable cricketer. "What came through more than anything else was his determination to succeed. That work ethic was clear," Leadon said.
Childhood friend and teammate Luke Robinson remembered Kane's singular focus on football. "The only thing on his mind was football... He lived and breathed football," Robinson stated. Kane's admiration for David Beckham was evident, even sporting a Mohican hairstyle like the former England captain.
Developing Through Loans
Tottenham Hotspur eventually offered Kane a place in their academy. While not initially considered the standout prospect in his age group, his dedication and willingness to learn impressed the coaching staff. Alex Inglethorpe, a former Tottenham youth-team coach, highlighted Kane's low-maintenance attitude and his constant drive for improvement as key strengths. "That obsession to improve is undoubtedly his greatest strength," Inglethorpe said.
Kane's development included several loan spells. His first professional experience came at League One club Leyton Orient in 2011, where he scored five goals in 18 appearances. Former Orient striker Scott McGleish noted Kane's readiness for "men's football" and his technical excellence, despite his slight frame at 17.
A loan spell at Championship side Millwall followed in January 2012. Despite the challenging atmosphere at the club, known as 'The Den,' Kane adapted well, scoring nine goals that helped the team avoid relegation. Former Millwall defender Alan Dunne commented on Kane's focus and confidence, noting that the pressure of the environment did not faze him.
Breaking Through at Tottenham
After a brief spell at Norwich City and a loan at Leicester City, Kane returned to Tottenham. He was handed his Premier League debut for Spurs in August 2012. It wasn't until April 2014, under manager Tim Sherwood, that Kane made his first top-flight start for Tottenham, scoring his first Premier League goal against Sunderland. He continued to score in the subsequent matches against West Brom and Fulham.
Sherwood, who had a strong belief in Kane, stated, "It was almost overdue to be honest." He saw Kane as a player who outperformed his peers in training daily and possessed the ability, desire, and mentality to reach the top. Sherwood even compared him to England legends Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer.
A Spurs Legend and Beyond
Kane's breakthrough season in 2014-15 saw him score 21 league goals, earning him his first England call-up in March 2015. He went on to become Tottenham's all-time leading scorer with 280 goals in 435 appearances, securing three Premier League Golden Boots but no major trophies with the club.
In 2023, Kane moved to Bayern Munich, where he has continued his prolific scoring form, netting 152 goals in 154 games for the German club. He has won the Bundesliga Golden Boot multiple times and secured two German league titles and a German Cup. Former Bayern defender Lothar Matthäus described Kane as having reinvented the centre-forward role, possessing not only goalscoring prowess but also versatility as a passer, dribbler, and tackler.
