Kane: England Players Missing Out on Vital Preparation Time

Harry Kane believes England's players withdrawing from national team duty are missing crucial preparation time for future tournaments, including the 2028 European Championships. The national team captain emphasized that time spent together with the squad is invaluable, especially given the limited opportunities compared to club commitments.

"You don't get that luxury with international football," Kane stated. "So, for me, personally, just every moment together [matters], every camp together, just to get to know players, get to know how people play tactically, how the manager wants us to play."

Kane's comments come as several key players, including Arsenal's Declan Rice and Chelsea's Cole Palmer, are absent from the current squad. Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo, along with Newcastle's Tino Livramento, are also unavailable. Kane acknowledged that while these players have their own situations, the loss of preparation time is significant.

He recalled speaking with Declan Rice, who sent him a voice note explaining his absence due to ongoing issues. Kane expressed trust in his teammates, noting Rice's dedication to both club and country. "I know how tough the summer was and I know especially in the Premier League how gruelling that schedule is," Kane said, referring to the demanding club season.

The England captain highlighted that the upcoming Nations League fixtures and subsequent camps in November and March are critical for team cohesion. "Although it seems far away, I think actually it’s not a long time at all," he added, looking ahead to major tournaments.

Kane also reflected on England's disappointing World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, describing it as more painful than previous personal setbacks, like missing a penalty in the Qatar World Cup. He admitted the manner of the loss, where England retreated defensively after taking the lead, has left lingering questions.

"It felt like it wasn't us as a team out there," Kane explained. "It wasn't the team that we wanted to be and said we'd be."

He stressed the need for the squad and coaching staff to discuss and answer how they can improve in such crucial moments, suggesting it might involve a combination of player personalities, mentality, and tactical approach.

"But I think it’s a conversation that we need to have as a group. We wanna try and take that next step because I think that would be an important one."

Manager Thomas Tuchel has included Everton's James Garner and Nottingham Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White in the 24-man squad to replace some of the absent players. Tuchel has reportedly addressed the squad about the challenge of translating strong training performances into matchday success, a recurring theme for previous England managers.

"I think it's trying to translate how well we train into games," Kane said of the team's focus. "It's easier said than done, but if we can get better at that I think we'll show an even better version of ourselves."

Kane acknowledged the difficulty of balancing the need to process past events with the immediate demands of international football. "In football, you don't have that," he said. "In football, before you know it's the next one, and now we're focused on Nations League."
