Kamala Harris's Speech in Detroit Sparks Online Debate Over Accent
Critics on social media claim the Vice President adopted a different speaking style during an appearance at a Detroit NAACP event.
Vice President Kamala Harris is facing online criticism following a speech she delivered Tuesday at an NAACP event in Detroit, where some critics allege she adopted a new accent. The remarks were part of an effort to encourage Democratic turnout ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
During the speech, Harris invoked the words of Shirley Chisholm, stating, "Shirley Chisholm talked about it. If you're not at the table, bring a folding chair. Otherwise, you might be on the menu. I'm conflating two people say, you know. It's okay to not be in love with a candidate. It's okay to vote and ask everybody else to vote, because this choice is better than that one."
Clips of her address quickly circulated on social media platforms, with users pointing to what they described as a noticeable shift in her speaking voice. The X account "End Wokeness" posted a clip, asserting that Harris unveiled a "new blaccent" and suggesting it signaled a potential 2028 presidential run. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson also commented on the delivery, calling it "so bad."
Similar accusations of accent alteration have been leveled against Harris in the past. During the 2024 campaign, she was accused of using a Southern accent at a rally in Atlanta, and differences in her delivery were noted during appearances in Detroit and Pittsburgh around Labor Day.
Some social media users linked the perceived accent change to political strategy. One X user wrote, "New accent = another presidential run," while another commented, "Another classic leftist politician trait: switching accents depending on who they're pandering to."
Other reactions on social media included dismissive remarks about her speaking style, with one user calling it "Queen Word Salad" and another sarcastically noting, "ItS tOtAlLy OrGaNiC."
When asked at the NAACP event about the possibility of running for president in 2028, Harris stated, "I have not decided if I’m going to run again." She has previously indicated that her current focus is on the upcoming midterms, having said earlier in April that her priority was "midterms, midterms, midterms."
