Kamala Harris Campaigns in Michigan to Bolster Progressive Senate Candidate
The Vice President's visit aims to energize Democratic voters behind Abdul El-Sayed in a crucial swing state.
Vice President Kamala Harris is campaigning in Michigan on Tuesday to support progressive Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed in a state critical for determining control of the Senate.
Harris is participating in events in Detroit focused on mobilizing Black voters. Her schedule includes a roundtable on Black maternal health with El-Sayed and an appearance at an NAACP event, according to her spokesperson.
The visit occurs during a key phase of the closely watched Senate race between El-Sayed and Republican candidate Mike Rogers, a former congressman. Democrats aim to retain the Michigan seat as part of their broader effort to secure a majority in the 100-member chamber in November. If Rogers wins, the path to a Democratic majority becomes more challenging.
Rogers has been campaigning in Detroit, a city with a significant Black population, where his campaign hopes to gain traction with voters who may be hesitant to support El-Sayed. In the August Democratic primary, voters in Wayne County, which includes Detroit, favored Haley Stevens, a more establishment-aligned Democrat, over El-Sayed. Harris's stops in the Democratic stronghold come as El-Sayed seeks to broaden his support base.
The race is also being viewed as a test of the national viability of a progressive platform. El-Sayed's platform includes universal healthcare and opposition to U.S. arms sales to Israel, positions that place him to the left of the Democratic Party establishment.
Harris has previously faced criticism from some progressives, particularly concerning her past outreach to moderate Republican voters and her stance on the war in Gaza. Her support for Israel has been a point of division within the Democratic Party, contributing to losses in Michigan, which has a substantial Arab American population.
El-Sayed has been a vocal critic of Israel's actions in Gaza, describing the conflict as a genocide, a characterization rejected by Israel. Some Jewish voters have expressed support for Rogers due to El-Sayed's position. El-Sayed has acknowledged past controversial remarks and stated his commitment to Jewish safety.
Harris's trip to Michigan also occurs amidst speculation about her potential presidential aspirations in 2028. She is also scheduled to visit Nevada and Georgia, other states considered important in presidential politics. Michigan was the fifth state to hold a Democratic presidential primary in 2024.
