Kai Trump Undergoes Wrist Surgery, Sidelines College Golf Season

Kai Trump, 19, has undergone surgery to repair a wrist injury, forcing her to the sidelines for the remainder of her freshman golf season at the University of Miami. Trump, the granddaughter of former President Donald Trump, announced the news Wednesday on Instagram, posting a photo of herself in a hospital bed with her arm in a cast.

She stated that while she had hoped to avoid surgery, the decision was made after consultations with her family, coaches, and the athletic training staff, emphasizing it was the best choice for her long-term health and future in golf. The injury occurred during her first tournament of the season.

"It’s certainly not how I envisioned the next few months, but sometimes the journey takes an unexpected turn, and I’m choosing to embrace this one with patience, and a whole lot of determination," Trump wrote in her statement. She expressed gratitude for the support from her coaches, family, and teammates during her recovery. A special thanks was given to Dr. Michelle Carlson, a hand surgeon at Manhattan's Hospital for Special Surgery.

Trump's wrist injury initially occurred in September while she was competing in the Golfweek Fall Challenge. At the time, she shared that she felt a "shock" in her arm after hitting a shot and later felt as though she had torn it again on the 10th hole. Doctors identified ligament damage, and she had been receiving stem cell treatments. She also expressed personal struggles adjusting to college life and her mother, Vanessa Trump's, ongoing breast cancer treatment.

Trump joined the University of Miami women's golf team as a freshman in August. She had previously announced her verbal commitment to play golf for the university in 2024.
