Country singer Kacey Musgraves used the opening night of her "Middle of Nowhere" tour at Chicago's United Center to encourage fans to donate to the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights. Musgraves described the nonprofit as an organization that provides aid to children whose parents have been "unfairly" deported.
"It’s a wonderful organization, and they help give aid — legal aid — and money to children whose parents have been deported unfairly," Musgraves told the audience. "It’s not a political thing. It’s just, these kids need help."
The Young Center, based in Chicago, works to pair volunteers with legal and social work professionals to advocate for unaccompanied and separated immigrant children in government custody. The organization's priorities include family unity, release from custody, fair proceedings, and ensuring the best interests of children.
In 2024, the Young Center reported serving 1,975 children from 53 countries and opening 1,388 new cases. Its 2025 annual report indicated an increase in children's average detention time from 30 to 198 days, with requests for assistance from detained parents quadrupling compared to the previous year.
Musgraves' appeal is an extension of her previous support for the charity. In April, a resale platform announced that a portion of proceeds from sales of items from her wardrobe would benefit the Young Center.
Previously, Musgraves invited three brothers, ages 18, 14, and 12, to open three shows in Texas in May after their family was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. Their family stated they entered the U.S. in 2023 through a now-defunct system and sought asylum after fleeing violence in Mexico.
These events occur as ICE enforcement has reached new levels. Federal sources reported that agents made approximately 51,000 immigration arrests in July, surpassing the previous record of around 43,000 in June. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated that federal law requires the detention of individuals entering the country illegally without valid documentation while their immigration claims are processed.
Musgraves' North American arena tour is scheduled to continue through October, with Midland as an opening act for the initial dates.
