Justin Verlander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, is nearing the end of his 22nd Major League Baseball season and indicated that retirement is likely imminent. Verlander, who was a "Legend Pick" for the All-Star Game, walked the MLB All-Star Red Carpet with his wife, model Kate Upton, in what he suggested could be a final appearance.
When asked on the red carpet about what it would take to prevent him from retiring, Verlander responded, "I don't know if there's much you can do at this point." He also acknowledged comments from teammate Tarik Skubal about comebacks, but downplayed the possibility, stating, "Sure. Here we are at the All-Star Break and I can't get healthy and pitch... But hopefully, I get healthy in the second half, you know? You know that's what I'm trying to do."
The future Hall of Famer, 43, recognizes that baseball is a demanding sport for younger athletes. He expressed his current focus on returning to health in the latter half of the season.
The MLB All-Star festivities in Philadelphia this year highlighted emerging stars such as Paul Skenes and Olivia Dunne, along with players like Brandon Marsh and Corbin Carroll. These younger talents are seen as representing the next generation of baseball.
Verlander and Upton have made multiple appearances on the All-Star Red Carpet throughout his career, including events in Los Angeles in 2022, Washington D.C., and Cleveland. The pitcher is expected to be a strong candidate for the Hall of Fame after his distinguished career.
