Jurgen Klopp Mum on Manchester City Title Stripping Amidst Financial Charges

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated he is content with the trophies he won during his tenure and will not advocate for Manchester City to be stripped of their titles following the recent guilty verdict regarding financial rule breaches.

Mancity were found to have disguised payments totaling £900 million over a nine-year period through sham deals, as detailed in a 40-page verdict published this week. The independent commission's findings suggested that the club artificially inflated sponsorship agreements and channeled funds from its Abu Dhabi owners via disguised payments to circumvent Premier League spending rules. Potential sanctions include relegation or the forfeiture of titles.

Klopp, who managed Liverpool in a significant rivalry with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, expressed his respect for Guardiola and City's style of play. "I have big respect for Pep Guardiola and City’s style of football. They played fantastic football and were a top-class opponent for us," Klopp said. He added that he has "nothing to do with it" regarding any sanctions and prefers to wait and see what happens. "I’m absolutely fine with what we achieved at Liverpool. We fought hard on the pitch," he commented, indicating he has no interest in the details of the charges.

Klopp's Liverpool team finished as runners-up to Manchester City by a single point in the 2018-19 season, with City accumulating 98 points to Liverpool's 97. The following season, Liverpool secured the Premier League title, finishing 18 points ahead of City. Another close title race occurred in the 2021-22 season, where Manchester City once again narrowly defeated Liverpool by one point.

In October 2022, Klopp had previously stated that "nobody can compete with City," suggesting that the club was one of three globally capable of unlimited financial spending. He commented that "you have the best team in the world and you put in the best striker on the market, no matter what it costs, you just do it." Reports at the time suggested senior City sources felt Klopp's remarks were "borderline xenophobic," a claim Klopp later rejected.

Despite a past joking remark where Klopp suggested he would throw a party if City were found guilty, he adopted a more measured tone when speaking ahead of Germany's game against Serbia. He acknowledged a humorous exchange with comedian John Bishop in May 2024, where Bishop suggested Klopp might end up with three Premier League titles if City were sanctioned, to which Klopp responded, "If you organise a bus parade I am in."
